TECHNICAL VOCATIONAL AREAS
TECHNICAL VOCATIONAL EDUCATION TRAINING. ( T.V.E.T.)
Introduction: The Technical Vocational Education Training Programme though not quite new to some parts of the world is a relatively new programme of training and learning to the Saba Comprehensive School. It was formally introduced into the school system in the month of August 2009.
The school for many years, offered subjects in Technical Science such as Woodwork and Technical Drawing .In earlier years the school offered Metalwork.
Within the last three years (2006-2009) the island saw the importance of developing the technical skills of the people; this resulted in a decision to introduce this programme into the school system.
The subjects presently offered at the school are Carpentry, Electricity, Welding Woodwork and Technical Drawing; other subjects to come on stream are Auto Mechanic .Plumbing, Masonry, and Joinery. It is the hope of the school and administration that with the building of a Technical Wing; the school’s ability to produce more skilled graduates will be greatly improved.
T.V.E.T. FORMAT: The T.V.E.T. format is a modularized one with a curriculum to facilitate the development of standards/testing and measurement for accreditation.
The modules of this programme are divided into units which indicate the start and finish of a training activity .Each module forms part of the job specification of a fully qualified person employed in the related occupation . The training system offers for independent units to be combined to suit the needs of the individual learner.
SUBJECT CURRICULUM
Carpentry Level ---1 :There are seven (7) modules in this subject with approximately forty- six (46) units and three (3) support subjects.
Module 1.----Orientation to Occupation Carpentry.
Module 2----Preparing Wooden Joints.
Module 3----Preparation of Hand tools and Power Tools
Module 4----Constructing and Installing Formwork.
Module 5----Constructing Wooden Floors.
Module 6----Erecting and Dismantling Scaffolding .
Module 7----Erecting Temporary Fencing for Construction Sites.
Support Subjects***1---- Language and Communication. 2----Calculations and Computation. 3----General/Technical Studies.
Welding-----Level 1. There are six modules in Wilding Level 1with a total of forty (40)units and three (3) support subjects.
Module 1-----Orientation to the occupation .
Module 2-----Fabrication Metal Components by Forming and Manipulation.
Module 3-----Performing Shielded Metal Arc Welding .(SMWA).
Module 4-----Performing Gas Metal Arc Welding (MIG).
Module 5 -----Performing Oxyacetylene Welding Operations.
Module 6-----Performing Oxyacetylene Cutting of Mild Steel.
Support Subjects*** 1 Language and Communication 2 Calculation and Computation. 3 General/Technical Studies.
Electrical Installation------Level 1 The subject is divided into seven (7) modules with a total of sixty one (61) units/competencies and three(3) support subjects.
Module 1-----Orientation of the Occupation.
Module 2-----Using and Maintaining Hand and Power Tools .
Module 3a-- Calculation and Measurement of Electrical Quantities .
Module 3b—Calculation and Measurements of Electrical Quantities.
Module 4a---Installing Electrical Cables and Fixtures.
Module 5---Installation of Domestic Lighting Devices and Consumer Service Equipment.
Support Subjects.***1---Language and Communication . 2—Calculation and Computation. 3---General/Technical Studies
EXAMINATIONS
T.V.E.T. training is competency based training .Each unit is divided into a number of competencies which are assessed by invigilators .Students are trained to be competent in many skilled areas by tutors and instructors ‘Using Students Guides and Checklists ,students develop the skills before they are assessed .
Assessments are student centered .A final assessment in the practical skill and a paper in the supporting subjects will determine the student’s readiness for the job market The end result being certification in the profession
